THURSDAY, March 28th - Woodcock Watch - 7:30pm; This isn't just another "snipe hunt"! The American Woodcock has one of the most elaborate courtship rituals of many of Ohio's avian friends and is one of the most intriguing to observe. Bring along a pair of binoculars and meet the naturalist on the Expedition Trail located behind the naturalist office to find out. FRIDAY, March 29th - Exhibit Opening;  Music of the Little Cities: Coal Dust, Culture & Cause for Congregation - 6pm  to 10pm; Music was a staple of life in the Hocking Valley Coal Fields during the boom-to-bust era that created dozens of mining towns in Athens, Perry, Hocking and Morgan Counties in the late 1800's, many of which are a shadow of their former selves today.   One thing that has not changed is that in good times and bad, music has always been a constant and treasured contributor to the culture of this region.  The exhibit will feature images, artifacts and interpretive panels on the theme developed by the Little Cities of Black Diamonds Council.  A Coal Town Soup Supper will compliment the exhibit opening with various foods available for sale.  A Lobby Concert with live music by Kay Carter will begin at 7PM. WEDNESDAYS - Chapel Cave Trek - 10am; Explore Long Hollow with a professional naturalist. It's always a fantastic time of year to trek this two mile loop, including a breathtaking box canyon and Chapel Cave. Your guides will interpret the diverse geology, biology and wildlife found along the way. It's an easy walk along a fairly wide trail with a few trees to step over, but generally easy to hike and completed in less than three hours. The ground can be a bit soft in some areas if there's recent rain, so be sure to wear good hiking shoes/boots. It's full of mature, open forest, fantastic geology, caves and waterfalls. Our one-way treks are designed for folks who are interested in swinging their arms a bit and covering some ground. One-way treks are different from our interpretive treks in that we make less frequent stops. SATURDAYS - Rappelling Trek - 10am; For mainstream climbers, rappelling is simply "the way down." For adventurous thrill seekers and first time visitors to the Hocking Hills it's an adrenaline rush unlike anything else. On the day of your rappelling trek, our expert guides walk you through the basics of safety, equipment, setup, technique and use of rappel devices. You'll begin on 20 to 30 foot walls and move to higher ground. Many first timers conquer Amazing Grace at 80' and some do Big Springs at 107' or Bent Tree at 120'. The experience is awesome. Equipment provided includes: helmet, ropes, rappel devices, adjustable harness and gloves.  We meet at the Rappelling area parking lot at 9:30am. Our one way treks are designed for folks that are interested in swinging their arms a bit and covering some ground. You'll get into a rhythm as your guide provides interpretive insights on the go. This trek includes protected areas that require permits to enter. SUNDAYS - Rock Climbing Trek - 10am; The Hocking State Forest Rappelling and Climbing area offers a convenient location and an excellent opportunity to be introduced to rock climbing and top rope climbing basics. Safety is our number one concern. Our expert guides are schooled and practiced in achieving and maintaining the highest safety standards. Beginners are taught basic setup, technique and use of rappel devices. You'll start out climbing 10 to 20 foot walls and may reach 40'. Experienced to advanced climbers will be surprised by the challenge and skill development opportunity this area provides. DAILY - SALT AND PEPPER SHAKER MUSEUM AT FIDDLESTIX; View several hundred vintage figural salt and pepper shaker sets at Fiddlestix Village; 24180 St. Rt. 93 just south of the St. Rt. 56/93 intersection. A changing display of shaker sets are arranged by categories on shelves in three large windows. Groups include, various animals, people, holidays birds, fish, tools, buildings, vacation souvenirs and many more. Most of the sets are from the 1940s to the present. A smaller window hosts a monthly special exhibit. The best viewing time is between 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Viewers are invited at their own risk, and the exhibit is open unless there is snow or ice on the parking lot. His Pencil Sharpener Museum, previously located at his home, has been moved to the Welcome Center and is open daily. This amazing collection of over 3400 pencil sharpeners has been featured in national magazines and is reputed to be the largest collection in the United States. DAILY (Mon - Sat) The Columbus Washboard Company Museum and Gift Shop - There is so much history from our company and building's past that we wish to share it with everyone. The tour will not only provide historical information, but will also include the opportunity to observe the manufacturing of washboards, and participate in making music with the washboard. The factory will operate daily, as usual, with our washboards being produced one at a time by hand. We are the only manufacturer of washboards remaining in the United States. Our gift shop features our washboards, memorabilia and new line of vintage soaps. The Museum is a WiFi hotspot and offers snacks and beverages, for a place to relax and take care of business. Tours will be offered Monday through Friday at 10:00am, noon, and 2:00pm; Saturdays by appointment. Special arrangements will be made for large groups. It's always a fantastic time of year to trek this two mile loop, including a breathtaking box canyon and Chapel Cave. It's an easy walk along a fairly wide trail with a few trees to step over, but generally easy to hike and completed in less than three hours. The ground can be a bit soft in some areas if there's recent rain, so be sure to wear good hiking shoes/boots. SATURDAYS - Rappelling Trek - 10am; For mainstream climbers, rappelling is simply "the way down." For adventurous thrill seekers and first time visitors to the Hocking Hills it's an adrenaline rush unlike anything else. On the day of your rappelling trek, our expert guides walk you through the basics of safety, equipment, setup, technique and use of rappel devices. You'll begin on 20 to 30 foot walls and move to higher ground. Many first timers conquer Amazing Grace at 80' and some do Big Springs at 107' or Bent Tree at 120'. The experience is awesome. SUNDAYS - Rock Climbing Trek - 10am; The Hocking State Forest Rappelling and Climbing area offers a convenient location and an excellent opportunity to be introduced to rock climbing and top rope climbing basics. Safety is our number one concern. Our expert guides are schooled and practiced in achieving and maintaining the highest safety standards. Beginners are taught basic setup, technique and use of rappel devices. You'll start out climbing 10 to 20 foot walls and may reach 40'. DAILY - SALT AND PEPPER SHAKER MUSEUM AT FIDDLESTIX; View several hundred vintage figural salt and pepper shaker sets at Fiddlestix Village; 24180 St. Rt. 93 just south of the St. Rt. 56/93 intersection. A changing display of shaker sets are arranged by categories on shelves in three large windows. Groups include, various animals, people, holidays birds, fish, tools, buildings, vacation souvenirs and many more. Most of the sets are from the 1940s to the present. A smaller window hosts a monthly special exhibit. The best viewing time is between 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Viewers are invited at their own risk, and the exhibit is open unless there is snow or ice on the parking lot.
