SATURDAY - Empty Bowls - 11am to 3pm; Empty Bowls returns to Hocking County to fight hunger as part of the 21st annual Make a Difference Day Festivities. The local fundraiser will occur at Central Elementary School, 40 North Street. Area potters donate handmade bowls for the special event, which features soup, dessert and a drink for a $10 donation per person. The bowl is a keepsake to take home for people to remember to continue the fight against hunger in Hocking County all year long. Proceeds will be split between Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Regional Food Center and United Way of Hocking County. SATURDAY - The Muleskinner Band - 6:30pm, doors open at 5pm; The Muleskinner Band brings its unique blend of country/western and bluegrass music (all delivered with a humorous bent) to town on Saturday evening at the Scenic Hills Senior Center. Doors open at 5 pm for great, home cooked food. Music starts at 6:30 pm. SATURDAY - Halloween on the Hocking - 7pm; Corn mazes can be scary and haunted houses can be terrifying, but nothing compares to the thrill of Halloween on the Hocking! On this haunted night, we canoe a five-mile stretch under the creepiness of the full moon. Stay close together since we do not know who may be lurking around the river bend. Hot chocolate, snacks and music, along with a roaring bonfire, will be offered for those lucky enough to make it back from the canoe trip. New Exhibit at the Historical Society features several hundred years of the county's history condensed into four panels on display. The timeline includes Native Americans, the first settlers (1798), the Civil War, the Hocking Valley Railway, and more...up to the year 1917, when Logan celebrated its centennial. Through October - "THROUGH THE LENS"; Tenth of twelve monthly exhibits for 2011. This exhibit will feature the work of the Hocking Valley Photography Group that meets at the Bowen House, under the mentorship of Dennis Savage, and will include fall themed photos, both black/white and color. Through October - FRIDAY - Starbrick Clay National Cup Show 2011; This is a juried exhibit of contemporary cups which takes place at the gallery every other year. DAILY - Paul A. Johnson Pencil Sharpener Museum - Mon to Sat, 9am to 5pm; Sun 11am to 5pm; Rev. Paul Johnson began his collection over 20 years ago. His Pencil Sharpener Museum, previously located at his home, has been moved to the Welcome Center and is open daily. This amazing collection of over 3400 pencil sharpeners has been featured in national magazines and is reputed to be the largest collection in the United States. DAILY (Mon - Sat) The Columbus Washboard Company Museum and Gift Shop - Monday through Friday at 10:00am, noon, and 2:00pm; Saturdays at 11:30 am and 1 pm, and Sundays and holidays by appointment. There is so much history from our company and building's past that we wish to share it with everyone. The tour will not only provide historical information, but will also include the opportunity to observe the manufacturing of washboards, and participate in making music with the washboard. The factory will operate daily, as usual, with our washboards being produced one at a time by hand. We are the only manufacturer of washboards remaining in the United States. Our gift shop features our washboards, memorabilia and new line of vintage soaps. The Museum is a WiFi hotspot and offers snacks and beverages, for a place to relax and take care of business. Tours will be offered Monday through Friday at 10:00am, noon, and 2:00pm; Saturdays at noon, and Sundays and holidays by appointment. Special arrangements will be made for large groups. If you advise your guests to "bring their own firewood" be sure to correctly inform them of the ban on bringing in firewood from out of the area. They will need to purchase firewood once they arrive in the Hocking Hills
Please advise visitors about the Hocking Hills State Parks' new "Carry In, Carry Out" policy - all waste and recyclables carried into the Parks must be carried out. Help keep the Hocking Hills clean and green.
