THIS WEEKEND - 11th ANNUAL SHOOT THE HILLS
PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST!

THURSDAY - Rip 'n Strip Class at the Bowen House - 7pm to 9pm; Learn how to knit, crochet, hook or braid with recycled items. The Bowen House, 192 N Market St, Logan; Call 740-385-0344 for more info or visit www.bowenhouse.org; FREE

FRIDAY - Little Cities Redbud Tour - 9am to 5pm; Starting in Shawnee's Historic District, join us for a heritage/environmental tour when the redbuds and dogwoods bloom. The tour will include a picnic lunch and boat ride at Burr Oak Park. Check out the view from Monroe Outlook; African-American History at Rendville and Payne's Crossing; brick history at Haydenville; labor history at Robinson's Cave in New Straitsville; and the Coal Mine Museum in Murray City. $68 ($60 for students or LCBD members) Organized by Little Cities of Black Diamonds; meet at Tecumseh Commons, 114 W Main St, Shawnee. FRIDAY through SUNDAY - 11th Annual Shoot the Hills Photography Contest - Contest starts Friday at 1pm; All photographers are invited to join Ohio's largest photo contest, Shoot the Hills. Held annually in the Hocking Hills Region (Ohio), the contest primarily promotes nature photography. More than $5,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to winners at the conclusion of the 3-day photography event. The contest is open to pros and amateurs alike, but digital entries must be captured within a specified 24-hour period (from 12:00 pm (noon) on April 20 to 12:00 pm (noon) on April 21). Digital entries must also have been made within the four-county coverage area of the Hocking Hills Region. Registration for contest is $35 - $45; other events are free. FRIDAY - Jeweled Dragons - 2pm; Join the Naturalist for a closer look at Hocking's not-so-mythical dragonflies & damselflies. These flying, crawling & swimming insects lead an amazing life that we can peek in on. Meet at the main playground in the camp (near site #143) for a short stroll down to Rose Lake. SATURDAY - Drive & Discover - 9am to 6pm; On the third Saturday of each month, take a scenic drive through the Hocking Hills while shopping for gifts and treasures such as handcrafted furniture, art glass, candles, quilts, wind chimes and more more! SATURDAY - 2012 Trillium Festival - 10:30am; Appalachia Ohio Alliance, a land conservancy serving SE Ohio invite you to "Mathias Grove" to celebrate 10 years of AOA service. Arrive at 10:30 for a morning hike. Bring a dish for the Potluck at 12:30pm. At 1pm there will be a speaker and special presentation followed by a 1:30pm hike. A $20 tax deductible donation is suggested to assist AOA in protecting more of southeastern Ohio hill country. Reservations are not required but will be accepted by calling Louise Warner at 740-983-2487 or Sandy Davidson at 614-451-3009. SATURDAY - Annual Wildflower Hike - 1pm to 3pm; 1.5-mile walk along Raccoon Creek to identify wildflowers and discuss folklore. Meet at Hope Furnace with your vehicle. Hike will be led by Lake Hope State Park Naturalist. Hope Furnace is located on State Route 278 (just south of Lake Hope State Park entrance); FREE

SATURDAY - A Victorian Tea at Ravenwood Castle - 2pm to 4pm; Ladies, just like when you were little, it's time to play dress-up! Put on your finest attire, with all the accessories and we'll pretend it's 1864. You'll be entertained with a visit by the beautifully costumed "Lady Penelope Hyde" from London, England. Lady Penelope, portrayed by Rebecca Nobile of Wellston, will talk about her life in Victorian London, and instruct us in "the language of the fan," and proper etiquette for proper Victorian ladies. The menu will feature delicacies such as tea sandwiches, cream puffs, petit fours and other goodies, plus assorted teas. SUNDAY - Hocking River Earth Day Clean Up - 10am to 1pm; Celebrate Earth Day on the Hocking River. Will you find a tire, a stove, or maybe a glider? The hunt for the best trash pick up story is on! Paddle your canoe and gather trash along the river. Shuttles depart on the hour. Trash bags and gloves provided. Rain or shine, with alternate plans for high water. THURSDAY, April 26th - Historic Lantern Tour of Ash Cave - 8pm; The mystery of Ash Cave is special as far back as the last Ice Age and beyond. Join the naturalist in the parking lot area to explore Ash Cave by lantern light and learn about this special history first hand. We supply the lights; you supply the imagination. SATURDAY, May 19th - Writing Workshop -Have you ever wanted to write a novel but don't know where to begin? Sherry Hartzler, author of Three Moons over Sedona and Island Passage, will guide you through those first pages of your novel. Learn how to grab the reader's attention in that first paragraph. Create "hooks" that make your novel a real "page turner." Sherry will conduct a workshop, Great Beginnings, on Saturday, May 19th at 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. The cost of this workshop will be $10.00, and the workshop will be limited to 25 people so reserve your spot today. NOW THROUGH May 20th - LOOKING FORWARD: Work by the Faculty of Columbus College of Art & Design - 10am to 4pm Tuesday through Saturday, 1pm to 4pm Sunday; Michael Goodson, Curator, has recently arrived at CCAD from New York City and has assembled an exhibition pairing diverse work by ten of the school's faculty, for example: A deconstruction of William Tecumseh Sherman's War is Hell speech, literally word for word, dispersed throughout contemporary Lancaster for people to find and keep, juxtaposed with an installation reflecting a personal history of a childhood in rural Ohio. Through April 28th - Logan-Hocking High School Art Exhibit Opening Reception - 6:30pm; Annual art exhibit by the Logan Hocking High School Art Students. His Pencil Sharpener Museum, previously located at his home, has been moved to the Welcome Center and is open daily. DAILY (Mon - Sat) The Columbus Washboard Company Museum and Gift Shop - There is so much history from our company and building's past that we wish to share it with everyone. The tour will not only provide historical information, but will also include the opportunity to observe the manufacturing of washboards, and participate in making music with the washboard. The factory will operate daily, as usual, with our washboards being produced one at a time by hand. We are the only manufacturer of washboards remaining in the United States. Our gift shop features our washboards, memorabilia and new line of vintage soaps. The Museum is a WiFi hotspot and offers snacks and beverages, for a place to relax and take care of business. Tours will be offered Monday through Friday at 10:00am, noon, and 2:00pm; Saturdays by appointment. Special arrangements will be made for large groups.
