April in the Hocking Hills

The old saying may be “April showers bring May flowers” but in the Hocking Hills April brings a flurry of spring activityAsh Cave (let’s hope it is not more of the white flurries!)  April showers have the waterfalls flowing and the wild flowers will soon be popping up to get ready for the 16th Annual Wildflowers & Waterfalls Hike on April 20, the 12th Annual Shoot the Hills Photography Competition April 19-21, and the 1st Annual Ohio Grandma Gatewood Day on April 27.

The scene is set and the photographers are ready for the 12th Annual Shoot the Hills LogoShoot the Hills Photography Competition! Online registration will be open through Thursday, April 18 with those who register by April 6 receiving a FREE Shoot the Hills t-shirt. CLICK HERE to register!
Not a photographer but enjoy photos of the Hocking Hills and surrounding counties? Join us on Sunday April 21 for the Awards Ceremony to see all the weekend entries and find out who wins the 12 Annual Shoot the Photography Competition.

Registration is now open for the Hocking Hills Spring Poker Run! Poker RunJoin us for a beautiful spring ride through the Hocking Hills with stops at several parks. April Naturalist Schedule

Friday April 510:00 AM *THE WONDERS of OLD MAN’S CAVE - Meet the naturalist at the Naturalist Cabin for a short hike and discover some facts about the history of the area and the rock formations that are found throughout the park.
Saturday April 610:00 AM *CEDAR FALLS STROLL - Join the naturalist to explore Cedar Falls and discover the unique natural & cultural history of this area of the park.
2:00 PM *HOCKING’S BIRDS OF PREY- Join the naturalist at the Naturalist Cabin for a closer look at Ohio’s hawks, owls, eagles and vultures. Naturalist Cabin will remain “OPEN” to explore and ask questions.
Friday April 122:00 PM *SCALAWAGS & RENEGADES - The Ohio Frontier was full of heroes and shady characters. Meet at the Shelter House at the Rock House to hike and explore our local history.
Saturday April 132:00 PM *RIDGETOPS & HOLLERS” – Ever wonder about the difference between a ridgetop and a ‘holler’? Join the naturalist at Ash Cave Parking area to find out.
Thursday April 189:00 AM *TRAIL TROLLS PROJECT DAY – We will meet at the Cedar Falls parking area to work on the washed out trail sections. Bring a sack lunch and a drink and dress for the weather. For more information about the Trail Trolls contact the naturalist office at (740) 385-8003 ext. 213
Friday April 192:00 PM *JEWELED DRAGONS Join the naturalist for a closer look at Hocking’s not so mythical dragonflies & damselflies. Meet at the main playground in the campground (near site #143) for  a short stroll down to Rose Lake.
Saturday April 2010:00 AM 16th Annual Wildflowers & Waterfalls Hike - Observe nature’s carpet of wildflowers and abundant waterfalls in beautiful Hocking Hills. Meet at the Ash Cave parking lot.
Friday April 262:00 PM CAMERAS & CRITTERS – Bring your camera and join the naturalist on the Hock-Hocking Expedition Trail located behind the Park Naturalist Office for a chance to photograph up close & personal some of our wilder residents.

Ohio Grandma Gatewood Day

Saturday April 27 – 6:30 Pm
Join Hocking Hills State Park and the Hocking Tourism Association for the first annual Ohio Grandma Gatewood Day.
This dedicated Ohio grandma spent her retiring years hiking and advocating some of the most exciting trails across the country - always returning home to her beloved Hocking Hills. Come celebrate her life with us as we dedicate her love of the outdoors and enjoy a twilight stroll along one of her favorite trails. We will end our evening under lantern light in Ash Cave while we talk about the local flora and fauna as well as the history of the area. Meet at the Ash Cave shelter house.
Are you a “5 Star” Hiker?
Take a copy of the schedule with you on the next hike (*) that you attend from the regular program schedule here at Hocking Hills State Park. When you join the naturalist for a hike and get the program schedule signed 5 times at different hikes, you will then be eligible to purchase this emblem to show how avid a hiking fan you really are.View and download the April Naturalist Schedule. Any hike that appears on the Hocking Hills State Park program and activity schedule is eligible. Have fun and we will see you at the next hike!
