UPCOMING
SATURDAY, April 27th - First Annual Grandma Emma Gatewood Day - 6:30pm; Celebrate the life of the first lady of Ohio hiking with a Twilight Hike of Ash Cave led by State Park Naturalist Pat Quackenbush.  Once in Ash Cave you will "meet" Grandma Gatewood.  Emma Gatewood gained international fame when she became the first woman to hike the entire Appalachian Trail (all 2,180 miles) solo and she was 67 years young when she made the historic hike.  Grandma Gatewood was also a primary founder of the Buckeye Trail, Ohio's official hiking trail system.  Her favorite place to hike was Hocking Hills and the Grandma Gatewood Trail takes hikers from Old Man's Cave to Ash Cave.  On December 20, 2012 Governor John Kasich signed HB 492 establishing April 27th as Grandma Emma Gatewood Day.  April 27th was selected as the day to honor the first lady of Ohio hiking because on April 27, 1967 Governor James Rhodes signed legislation making the Buckeye Trail the official hiking trail of Ohio.  Meet at the Ash Cave parking area.Hocking Hills State Park, Ash Cave, State Route 56; call 740-385-2750 for more info.
