Johnson's visit to Athens, Ohio in May of 1964 marked the beginning of his revolutionary War on Poverty and Great Society campaigns that changed America, forever. Fifty years later, a unique partnership between campus and community will allow the university and the southeastern Ohio region to reflect upon his visit, and its impact on a region that the president identified as the impoverished Appalachian Region during his term. On April 3-4 a commemorative gathering titled A Region Reflects: The 50th Anniversary of LBJ's War on Poverty Speech will be centered in Athens while also visiting the surrounding country-side. The event will allow residents of the region, students, faculty and visiting history and social movement buffs to take stock of the many programs that were instituted following Johnson's historic speech and that now engrained in American society. All events are free but advance registration is required. To register visit http://lbjsoutheastohio.com.

THURSDAY, April 3rd - The Steel Wheels - 8pm; SPECIAL BACKSTAGE SHOW -The Steel Wheels have captured audiences across the country with their heady brew of original soulful mountain music and their deep commitment to roots and community. The Steel Wheels is an amalgamation of hard work and easy rapport. The band is renowned for their raw energy and chemistry on stage, where they often cluster tightly around a single microphone to adorn Trent Waglers unmistakable tenor with bell-clear four-part harmonies inspired by their shared Mennonite heritage. Add to this Eric Brubakers lively and evocative fiddle, Brian Dickels grounded yet buoyant upright bass, and Jay Lapps signature mandolin style, and it is no surprise that The Steel Wheels have enthralled the contemporary Americana scene. FRIDAY, April 4th - Tinariwen - 8pm; The desert is a place of hardship and subtle beauty, a stark world that reveals its secrets slowly and carefully. Life in the desert is resilient and strong, and the people are gentle giants among the sand, storms, and sun. For Saharan blues band Tinariwen, the desert is their home, and their hypnotic and electrifying guitar rock reflects complex realities of their homebase in North West Africa. They are Tuareg, descended from nomadic people who have wandered the dunes for millennia, but the music of Tinariwen travels too, reverberating far from dusty plains of Mali. Their 2011 album Tassili, recorded in the Algerian desert -- in a tent and under the stars with a esteemed cadre of musicians including Nels Cline and TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone -- won a Grammy Award for Best World music. Now their new record Emmaar returns to their roots, delivering stripped-down dirges, effervescent anthems, and above all, a return to simplicity and honesty. Presented by Stuart's Opera House, Ohio University African Studies and Ohio University Performing Arts. Tickets: $20 - $40.
